Assembly Biosciences is a biopharmaceutical company developing novel, orally administered therapeutic agents for the treatment of serious viral and liver diseases. At this time, Assembly has four candidates in clinical development. Two HSV helicase-primase inhibitor (HPI) candidates, are in clinical development for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes. These candidates target the helicase-primase complex, a clinically validated mechanism and an essential viral enzyme complex that is conserved across both HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both HPIs have recently completed Phase 1b proof-of-concept studies and have been in-licensed by Gilead Sciences who is responsible for future development. An orally administered small molecule drug candidate targeting inhibition of NTCP, a transmembrane protein selectively expressed on liver cells that facilitates bile acid transport and is utilized by the hepatitis B and delta viruses for entry into liver cells is in development. This agent is in clinical development for the treatment of chronic hepatitis delta infection and cholestatic liver diseases. A next-generation hepatitis B virus capsid assembly modulator candidate has completed a Phase 1b proof-of-concept study for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B infection. Assembly is currently evaluating partnering opportunities for this agent. Assembly also has multiple research programs focused on discovering additional novel antivirals, including a broad-spectrum non-nucleoside polymerase inhibitor for the treatment of transplant-associated herpesviruses.
